About the University

The mission of the Industrial Campus will be articulated through the training of professionals for the exercise of activities related to the naval and industrial fields, Research and Development based on the knowledge that is produced on campus. This knowledge is valued through an effective transfer of science to the business environment, as a result of the close interrelationship that exists.

The Industrial Campus is configured as a reference campus and recognized nationally and internationally in the context of the European Atlantic Arc, with its own identity visible and clearly specialized in the industrial field in both naval and oceanic and other industrial fields and closely linked to economic potential. of its area of influence.

A campus closely related to the industrial environment in which there is an effective valorisation of research and innovation and which allows an active transfer of knowledge with the industrial world.

The Campus of Ferrol is located in the third urban concentration of Galicia among the 67 tree species of the Esteiro botanical garden, some in rehabilitated buildings that conformed the old Marina Hospital of Ferrol and others in new buildings.

Located very close to the Campus are the Pantín and Doniños beaches, ideal to practice surf and water sports in general. The Cultural University Center of Esteiro hosts the cultural offer of the Campus, both the courses and workshops (art, theatre, music, photography…), and the cinema cycles or exhibitions.

University life in Ferrol is an accumulation of experiences. Discover them on the Ferrol Industrial Campus!

About the program

*Application Date: 15th November/1st March

Sustainable Ship and Shipping 4.0 (SEAS 4.0) is a year-and-half-long (90 ECTS) integrated, international, innovative, and methodologically diversified course to award a double Master Degree.

It is taught in English and jointly designed by SEAS 4.0 Consortium Universities: University of Napoli Federico II, University of A Coruna, University of Zagreb and the Technical University of Hamburg.

The development of the SEAS 4.0 Master Programme has been inspired by an emerging necessity to enlarge and improve the knowledge of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering curricula with elements of Ship Management, Infologistics and Sustainability concepts in the frame of Industry 4.0. Such elements will be required skills for future Ship Designers, Marine Engineers and Ship Managers.

SEAS 4.0 is tailored for students who hold a minimum of 240 ECTS in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering or other relevant technical degrees (mechanical, civil, aerospace, etc). SEAS 4.0 offers them a possibility to extend their knowledge and skills within a multidisciplinary team. A mínimum B2 CEFR english level or equivalent is required. SEAS 4.0 is based on a holistic approach to higher education of new experts ready to work in an increasingly digitalized, automated, and globally mobile environment.

OBJECTIVES

SEAS 4.0 objectives are to train future engineers and increase their employment competitiveness in the multidisciplinary and global domain of ship design, construction, and management. Its program will couple environmental and legal competencies, knowledge of the economic framework of green and sustainable economy, digitalisation related to the newest needs in the fields of shipbuilding and maritime transport in studentcentered education increasing students cultural competencies and life-long learning attitudes.

SEAS 4.0 comes as response to such requirements by implementing the concepts of Industry 4.0 in its curriculum, through dedicated courses.

MOBILITY

One of the main characteristics of this master is mobility, which is done between consortium universities. The first semester is done in Italy, hosted by the programme coordinator, the University of Naples Federico II. The second semester will take place in the Industrial Campus of Ferrol, Spain, hosted by the University of A Coruña. Finally, the third semester could take place either in Naples, Ferrol, Zagreb (hosted by the University of Zagreb) or Hamburg (at the Technical University of Hamburg), where students will take courses and will develop their internships and master thesis.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Master programme SEAS 4.0 is designed as a Multidisciplinary master, embracing Sustainable Design with Industry 4.0 elements through the student centered education. By its definition “Student-centered instruction” focuses on skills and practices that enable lifelong learning and independent problem-solving.

On this respect, the program has been built around a series of content blocks which represent the basic topics which have to be developed during the SEAS 4.0 master degree in order to provide the full spectrum of knowledge needed to fulfil the SEAS 4.0 academic objectives. These content blocks are the following:

  • Energy Efficiency and Sustainability (EES). Block which includes the courses directly related to increasing the sustainability and efficiency of ships, from design stage to life cycle analysis.
  • Simulation and modelling (SIM). One of the main needs of 4.0 industry is to obtain tools to simulate the processes that are under analysis, so that optimization and control strategies could be adopted to increase the efficiency of such processes. In the case of SEAS 4.0 proposal, simulation and modelling mainly covers structures, hydrodynamics and ship motions in the field of ship design and shipbuilding processes in the field of ship construction.
  • Information systems and data management (IDM). This block groups all courses related with data collection and analysis and the development of information systems, basic while implementing 4.0 industry paradigm.
  • Robotics & Autonomous Systems (RAS). Finally, this block includes courses which cover the field of marine robotics and autonomous vehicles, which are always associated not only to sustainability, but also to 4.0 industry concepts.
  • Polar routes challenges in structure and technology (PR). This group of courses is focused on the technological needs which face ships and floating structures operating in polar areas, not only but specially focused on the structural demands of such systems.
  • Ship operation, management and infologistics (SO). In this group of courses the aspects related to ship operation and management are included, considering safety, economical and operational aspects, including also the necessary regulatory framework.

“I found really enriching the intercultural experience, meeting colleagues from all over the world and tasting different cultures and perspectives. I also enjoyed the possibility of learning from lecturers from many different universities quite advanced technical topics, including sustainability and industry 4.0, probably the most important areas that the naval industry will face in the next years. I am sure all of that will help me in my future career”.
